About MortgageStressTestCalculator.ca
MortgageStressTestCalculator.ca is a free tool and guide set about one rule, Canada's mortgage stress test, run by the MITEY network. It shows your qualifying rate, whether a price passes, what the test costs you and honest ways to pass, using rules we check against OSFI, federal regulations and CMHC, dated on every page.
What this site does
Most stress test calculators stop at "your qualifying rate is X". This one runs the whole test the way a lender does (GDS and TDS at the qualifying rate, the down payment rules, the insured price cap and amortization rules) and then answers the questions people actually have: do I pass at this price, how much buying power does the test take away, and what would it take to pass.
It also covers the parts of the rule that are often wrong elsewhere: the straight-switch exemption at renewal (OSFI, November 21, 2024, and the federal Mortgage Charter for insured loans), what provincially regulated credit unions do, and the history of the qualifying rate since 2016.
Who runs it
MortgageStressTestCalculator.ca is part of MITEY, a Canadian network of free financial calculators and plain-language guides. Its sibling, MortgageAffordabilityCalculator.ca, covers the full purchase budget. Our flagship, Calculating.ca, hosts Mitey's AI helper. Mitey, the young yeti on these pages, is our guide character: he points to the next useful step but never decides for you.
The home calculator's default household, computed twice: by this site's engine and by the shared MITEY calculation engines, built separately from the same primary sources.

Editorial standards
- Primary sources for every rule: OSFI, the Department of Finance Canada, CMHC, provincial regulators, statutes and the Bank of Canada. Each page lists its sources with the date we checked them.
- Dated rules and a changelog. Rules were last checked November 1, 2026. Each rule carries its own effective date; the methodology page keeps the changelog.
- No invented numbers. Market rates come from the Bank of Canada with their own dates. We don't publish lender offers, rankings, testimonials or "best rates". Tables on our guides are computed by the calculator's engine from stated inputs.
- Estimates, not approvals. A lender also looks at credit, income history, the property and its own policies.
How the site is paid for
The tools are free. If you ask us to, someone in the MITEY network can talk through your numbers; that is the only way your details reach anyone. We are not a lender or a mortgage brokerage, we have no lender affiliations, and we never receive your calculator inputs unless you choose to send them.
